Between them, Dan Kowalski and Joe Upton logged more than 50 years fishing commercially for salmon, halibut, and crab all throughout Alaska. Both lived and worked out of remote settlements. When Alaska visitors began approaching several million a year, they wanted to share some of the drama and stories they had heard, seen, and experienced over the years. Joe Upton started with the award-winning Alaska Blues, A Fishermen’s Journal, followed by others highlighting the drama of Alaskan life, culture, and history.
In 2012 Upton and Kowalski began traveling around Southeast Alaska together, filming dramatic videos about particular places, personal experiences and historical events. With the rapid grown and acceptance of QR codes, they found Joe’s Alaska Story Map a perfect place to use the codes to allow users to connect quickly and easily to the videos.
